AED Training Options
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device about the size of a laptop computer that analyzes the heart’s rhythm for an abnormality and, if necessary, directs the rescuer through voice prompts to deliver an electrical shock to the victim. The shock, called defibrillation, may help the heart reestablish an effective rhythm on its own and save someone’s life. AEDs are available at many ASU buildings and facilities. In addition, ASU Police and the Tempe, Phoenix, and Mesa Fire Departments have AEDs available on many of their vehicles.
The state of Arizona requires that users of AEDs be trained in order to be covered under “Good Samaritan” laws that protect the AED user attempting to provide life saving assistance. To meet this requirement ASU identifies a group of employees near each AED unit and arranges opportunities for the required training.
Currently there are two options for AED and CPR training available on campus. The first option is a web based AED training through Emergency University. Employees wanting to sign up on their own for AED/CPR web based training can register at http://www.emergencyuniversity.com/asu/. There is a charge for the training that must be paid by either the department or the individual.
The second option for training is through Campus Recreation. The department offers CPR/AED and first aid training through the American Red Cross. The purpose of the program is to give individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Through this program individuals will actively participate in class discussions, hands on skills sessions and video presentations. Classes are taught by certified instructors teaching to a national standard.
Programs can be developed to suit the needs of each department. The courses can include training in adult, infant and child CPR and first aid. Upon completion in a course, participants will receive American Red Cross certification in CPR (valid for 2 years) and First Aid (valid for 3 years).
Campus Recreation training programs can be brought to your location or can be held at the Student Recreation Complex. All you need to provide is the room and a TV/DVD player. A two week notice and a class size of at least 5 participants is required to schedule a class.
Campus Recreation Training Fee: $30 per participant Departments can pay through P.O. or P-card for the class. Invoices will be created following the class and submitted to the appropriate departments.
