MTW's model is to undertake and advance complex applied research for the benefit of society through collaborative engagement of private and public enterprises. By bringing the voice of the customer and appropriate business process rigor into the academic lab, we aim to focus applied research and product development in support of ASU's Design Imperatives of the New American University. The MTW is located in the ASU Research Park in Tempe.

One of the major research activities at the MTW is the Flexible Display Center (FDC), which is a university/industry/government collaborative venture designed to advance full color flexible display technology and flexible display manufacturing to the brink of commercialization. Other major research activities at the MTW include laboratories for the Applied NanoBioscience Center, the School of Materials, the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and other ASU research efforts.
