What numbers do I call to get in touch with ASU Police?
There are several ways to contact this department. You can call 480.965.3456 to contact the Police communications Center. You can also stop by any campus police station. Dial 911 in cases of emergency.

What should I do if I become a crime victim?
If it is an emergency or in-progress crime, call 9-1-1. For all non-emergency calls, the first thing you should do is call the police department for assistance and advisement about reporting a crime under your particular circumstances. You can reach the police communications center at 480.965.3456.

How can I file a police report?
For reporting crimes on campus you can come to the front counter of the police station or call the police communications center at 480.965.3456 for an officer to respond to your location. The officers will be happy to assist you in completing a report. Make sure you have valid identification.

What happens after I file a police report?
The report will be forwarded to the Investigation unit for follow-up. Not all reported crimes are solvable, and the amount of suspect information available will determine if an investigator will be assigned to follow-up. Once the investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office if there is a prosecutable crime.

How is a sexual assault crime handled?
If a sexual assault is reported to the police department, we will respond with an officer to interview and take a report. We will also transport the survivor to a hospital or SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) treatment center as needed. As with any other reported crime, the report will be forwarded to Investigations for follow-up. Depending on the circumstances, a Detective may respond to the scene as needed. Once the investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office if there is a prosecutable crime.

How do I obtain an order of protection or restraining order against another person?
A person may file a petition with a magistrate, justice of the peace or superior court judge for an order of protection or restraining order. The petition must state the name of the plaintiff, name and address of the defendant, if known, specific statements of alleged incidents, relationship between the parties, and desired relief. A filing fee may be required.

The court will review the petition and any evidence offered by the plaintiff to determine if the order should be issued without further hearing.

Are safety escorts available?
A safety escort service is available on the Tempe Campus. This service is available from Mon-Sat, 7 p.m. to 3 a.m., and Sunday's, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The service is free. Call 480.965.1515 to arrange for an escort. For an escort on another campus or after the hours of operation, call ASU Police at 480.965.3456 and an Officer or Police Aide will provide an escort for you.

What is the process to become a police officer/ police aide/ dispatcher? How do I become a police officer/ police aide/dispatcher?
The police department is interested in hearing from qualified candidates. Police department vacancies can be viewed on the ASU Human Resources web site at: http://www.asu.edu/asujobs You may also contact the department's human resources coordinator at 480.965.6550. The criteria vary, depending on the position.

Police Officer - Open at this time and positions to be filled upon successful completion of all hiring standards. This is a full time position.
Police Aide - Full and part-time positions are available.
Police Radio Dispatcher - Full time positions are available.

Where do I get a background clearance letter if I need one?
ASU Police can write clearance letters. Please contact the Records unit at 480.965.5645.

What can I do to protect myself from computer theft?
There are several ways to protect your computer which include locks, cables and engravings. ASU Police offers a theft deterrent program through our Crime Prevention unit. Call 480.965.1972.

What is the process after an individual is arrested by ASU Police?
Arrests are handled in one of three ways: Some misdemeanor crimes can be handled by the issuance of a criminal citation.Other misdemeanors and some felonies are handled by taking persons arrested to the police station for booking (fingerprints, photographs, etc.). They can be released after booking or taken to the Maricopa County Jail where they will be seen by a Magistrate. The judge then decides whether to release the person or hold them until trial.

Am I allowed to carry my weapons on campus with a Concealed Weapons permit?
Possession or storage of weapons in all ASU residential housing facilities is prohibited. Possession, use or storage of weapons on all land and buildings owned, leased or under the control of Arizona State University or its affiliated or related entities is prohibited. ASU students and employees are required to report violations and suspected violations of the policy to ASU Police immediately. [ARS 13-2911, 13-3102, DPS 201-05, ABOR 5-303.3, 5-308.

Having a concealed weapons permit does not exclude anyone from the policy. Only certified police officers performing his/her official duties may carry, openly or concealed, a weapon onto the University.

What weapons are prohibited?
A prohibited weapon is any object or substance designed to inflict a wound, cause injury, or incapacitate, including, without limitation, all firearms, BB guns, air guns, pellet guns, switchblade knives, knives with blades five or more inches in length, and chemicals such as mace, tear gas, or oleoresin capsicum, but excluding normally available over-the-counter self-defense chemical repellents. Chemical repellents labeled "for police use only", or "for law enforcement use only" may not be possessed by the general public.

What are the laws for bicycles, skateboards, or in-line skates?
The University adopted a "non-pedestrian code" to address bicycling, skateboarding and in-line-skates. These items are permitted if their use if for transportation purposes. Using them to perform tricks, jumps, or operate in an unsafe manner is prohibited.

I lost something on campus. Where can I find it?
Each campus has a Lost & Found location. On the Tempe campus it is located at the Memorial Union. ASU at the West Campus it is located inside the University Center Building. ASU Polytechnic the lost and found is located in the Campus Union. Downtown Phoenix Campus it is located inside the UCent building at the information desk.

Is tailgating allowed at university events? Can I take my own food or drink into the stadium?
The Arizona Board of Regents authorizes the president to permit the consumption of alcoholic beverages at designated areas of the university when football games are played. Unless otherwise designated by the president, consumption of alcoholic beverages at authorized tailgate parties is limited to beer and does not include spirituous liquor, wine, or other alcoholic beverages. Alcoholic beverages may be consumed for a period of three and one-half hours prior to each football game and cease at kick off.

Approved locations for tailgating are: Apache Boulevard parking structure, Tyler Street parking structure, Tenth Street parking structure, Stadium parking structure, University Towers parking structure, Packard Drive South parking structure; parking lots 3,8,27,44,49,58,59,59N, 59NE.

No personal food or drink can be brought into the stadium with the exception of purchased, sealed, unfrozen water bottles.

What hours do the FLASH and Valley Metro bus system run?
The hours for the Tempe Campus and downtown Tempe FLASH system are Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The last buses leave ASU Lot 59 at approximately 7:40 p.m. (5:40 p.m. on Fridays) and arrive back at ASU Lot 59 at 8:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. on Fridays)
