Classroom Standards
Classroom teaching and learning are an important part of ASU's mission to be The New American University. Therefore providing an environment that is conducive to stimulating, collaborative exchanges is a primary responsibility of many departments at ASU. Our centrally-scheduled classrooms are a combination of the following types of rooms:
| Traditional - loose seating | capacity: 25-60 |
| Traditional - collaborative | capacity: 25-40 |
| Seminar | capacity: 19-25 |
| Lecture hall | capacity: 50-150 |
| Auditorium | capacity: 150+ |
| Computer | specific to discipline |
Quality Standards
A well-maintained classroom requires a concerted effort from the entire campus community. We ask that problems be reported as soon as possible so that we can resolve issues as soon as resources become available. To report a classroom environment problem, please submit the FACMAN Problem Reporting Form.
- Cleanliness - The classrooms are examined each semester for overall condition and correction of problems. Each day the rooms will be cleaned, chalk or markers will be replenished, and trash and recycling will be removed.
- Seating - Seating will vary across campus, according to the criteria set forth for the multiple types of classrooms. Seating should be selected to meet minimum comfort standards and still satisfy the requirements of uniform Building/Fire Codes, cost, durability, functional comfort, appearance/finish, and performance over time
- ADA Accessibility - All classrooms must have at least one ADA-accessible work space. However this number may increase depending on the style of the classroom, and must comply with 'The ADA Standards for Accessible Design' and 'ASU's Accessibility Standards'.
- Visibility/Lighting - Each student should have a clear, unobstructed view of all instructional space in the classroom. Optimal classroom lighting should include day lighting, multi-modal lighting, controllability, and optimized energy performance.
- Vertical Writing Surface - Each classroom should have a high-fired ceramic-on-steel dry marker white board. At the top of the white board, a tack board strip and clips for display materials are required.
- Mediation - A minimum of an overhead projector, projection screen, and instructor data connection shall be provided for each classroom. ASU classroom design will continue to evolve as technology enhances teaching and as learning capabilities become available. For specific information on classroom technology please contact Classroom Support.
- Acoustics - All classrooms are designed to ensure that students are able to hear presented material from every point in the room. Any noises generated from HVAC or other mechanical devices that disrupt the students' ability to hear the instructor should be reported to UCL Space Management.
